Allison Buchanan: Allison Buchanan reviews Texas star Pat Green's show at the Tennessee Theatre

The sound of the crowd finally dies down as the sandy haired man takes his place on stage. He stares somberly out at the crowd with a look of steady concentration. Slowly his head turns to rest his eyes on a young brown eyed girl in the midst of the crowd smiling up at him from ear to ear. The man grins, sticking his tongue out at her and wagging “moose ear” hands from side to side in a taunting way. The crowd erupts in laughter. He may be a three time Grammy nominee, notable Texas legend, and well on his way to making a name for himself on the Country Billboards, but at heart Pat Green is still just a kid. Perhaps that explains the loyal following of college age and young adult fans. His laid back music appeals to a diverse range of fun loving people just lookin’ to have a good time.

Last Friday night the Tennessee Theater was filled with the voices of hundreds singing along to Green’s hit Wave on Wave. Some of those voices were definitely off key, some slurring a few more words than can be considered appropriate, and (unfortunately for those of us in attendance)… some of those loyal fans just chose to belt it out, testing their own lung capacity and the eardrums of those around them. Bodies flooded the aisles, everyone dancing, clapping, and singing along. It was evident that Green’s Texas style of country music is starting to gain some notable support in this college town.

Pat’s diversity as a songwriter becomes more evident with each album. Old favorites like George’s Bar remind us of carefree college days and his newer hits like Lucky Ones talk of Pat Green’s love for his wife and family. Green’s newest creation, Cannonball, is slated to hit the shelves August 22nd. If the sound of his latest single Feels Just Like It Should is indicative of the entire Cannonball album, it is sure to deliver a bevy of rockin’ tunes celebrating living the dream. So, whether you’re a loyal Green fan, proudly sporting his latest Tee and grease stained trucker hat (and yeah, it came that way when you bought it), or new to this Texas native’s style of country, be sure to check it out. Friday night’s live show definitely delivered the high energy good time this Pat Green fan has come to expect and I can’t wait to see what he has in store for us next!

Great show friday night, as is always the case with PG. How can a guy as good as Pat Green, sell out the Astro dome with 60,000 screaming Texans, but can't sell out the Tennessee Theatre? Jack Ingram should be a good show Wednesday night at the Bijou. Plenty of tickets left.
